“The Apothecary’s Daughter” Book Review

Jan 26, 2015 by

Welcome back to Rachel’s Back Talk! I’m so glad you could join me again. Today I am reviewing another one of Julie Klassen’s books, The Apothecary’s Daughter.

As is my custom, if I could ask Julie one question about The Apothecary’s Daughter, it would be — “Why did you want Lilly to have numerous suitors?” And if you want to know why I asked that questions, I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out!

And without further ado, on to Rachel’s Back Talk!

From the Back Cover:

LILLY HASWELL REMEMBERS EVERYTHING — WHETHER SHE WANTS TO, OR NOT …

As Lilly toils in her father’s apothecary shop, preparing herbs and remedies by rote, she is haunted by memories of her mother’s disappearance. Villagers whisper the tale, but her father refuses to discuss it. All the while, she dreams of the world beyond — of travel and adventure and romance.

When a relative offers to host her in London, Lilly discovers the pleasures and pitfalls of fashionable society and suitors, as well as clues about her mother. But will Lilly find what she is searching for — the truth of the past and a love for the future?

The Apothecary’s Daughter was a different style of book that you are not used to reading and Julie Klassen tells it perfectly! Lilly isn’t sure what she wants, but she allows others to try to convince her that what she does want is a life of privilege. When Lilly does come back, she returns with suitors and finds it even harder to leave to do what she thinks she wants.

I admired Lilly’s courage to stand by her father because she knew that his shop meant everything to him. She was willing to put aside her dreams and just focus on him. In the process, she found what…and who her heart truly desired. Out of the three suitors that seemed to be pursuing her, I found myself rooting for one and even getting a bit anxious towards the end of the book. But Julie didn’t disappoint!

Other books by Julie that I will read next:
The Girl in the Gatehouse

Lady of Milkweed Manor

The Dancing Master
