“On Wings of Devotion” ~ Book Review

Jan 31, 2020 by

Welcome back to Rachel’s Back Talk! I’m so glad you could join me again. Today I am reviewing the second book to Roseanna White’s series, “The Codebreakers”: On Wings of Devotion!

As is my custom, if I could ask Roseanna one question about On Wings of Devotion, it would be — “Were did you come of with the nickname of “Black Heart” And was it difficult giving that to your hero?” And if you want to know why I asked that, I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out!

And without further ado, onto Rachel’s Back Talk!

From the Back Cover:

Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart”

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.

As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.

With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.

Once again, Roseanna knocked it out of the park! I love how her books are always filled with mystery, intrigue, and romance – and “On Wings of Devotion” was no exception.

From the very beginning, it seemed that Arabelle had her life all together and though she might not have been completely happy, she was satisfied. But even through the tragedies and the difficult times that life threw her way, Arabelle remains a light and continues to rely on God for her strength. I loved that brief glimpse we got when Arabelle seemed to be at her wits end and then Phillip said – “Don’t vanish on me, darling…That’s not what you do. Not you. You pray or sing one of those hymns or say something about God being there when no one else is. Isn’t that right?” What a testimony of Arabelle’s influence and love on Phillip’s life.

And then there’s the dark, brooding, and oh so handsome hero – Phillip Camden. I loved having this deeper look into his life. Phillip carried so much burden from past mistakes and for so often would shrug of God’s love. Having Arabelle come into his life brought him meaning and joy again and it was beautiful watching his whole demeanor change and grow.

And one of my favorite aspects of her books is how she manages to seamlessly weave in characters from her previous series! Make me want to go back and re-read all of her books 😉

I received a free copy from the author. No review, positive or otherwise, was required — all opinions are my own.

Roseanna-2018-218x300

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary.
