“The Vow” Book Review
Welcome back to Rachel’s Back Talk! I’m so glad you could join me again. Today I am reviewing Jody Hedlund’s novella, The Vow. This is a prequel to her new YA book An Uncertain Choice which I have the privilege to review and blog about next week!
As is my custom, if I could ask Jody one question about The Vow, it would be — “What inspired you to write about a medieval princess who wasn’t your ‘typical’ princess?” And if you want to know why I asked that question, I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out!
And without further ado, on to Rachel’s Back Talk!
From the Back Cover:
In this historical romance novella by Jody Hedlund, young Rosemarie finds herself drawn to Thomas, the son of the nearby baron. But just as her feelings begin to grow, a man carrying the Plague interrupts their hunting party. While in forced isolation, Rosemarie begins to contemplate her future—could it include Thomas? Could he be the perfect man to one day rule beside her and oversee her parents’ lands?
Then Rosemarie is summoned back to her castle in haste. The disease has spread, and her family is threatened. And the secret she discovers when she returns could change her future forever.

I honestly couldn’t put this book down. Jody Hedlund wove a masterful tale — in a novella no less! I felt myself bound with Rosemarie. Her sweet compassionate spirit was compelling and her sense of duty was noble and sure. She didn’t seem overly frightened, except when faced with torture scenes. Rosemarie is the type of female most young girls would want to be.
I love Jody’s historical fiction writing and this young adult version was no exception. This is just the type of book that any young adult would want to read. It had action, love, and a sense of urgency that spurred me on to read the novel!
And because I already read An Uncertain Choice, I would highly recommend that anyone who wants to read that, read the novella first! The Vow provides you with such a back story that brings even more depth to the novel!!
