“So Rare A Gift” by Amber Lynn Perry
Welcome back to Rachel’s Back Talk! I’m so glad you could join me again. Today I am reviewing Amber Lynn Perry’s book, So Rare A Gift.
As is my custom, if I could ask Amber one question about So Rare A Gift it would be — “Is it difficult to write a ‘marry for protection’ story line?” And if you want to know why I asked that question, I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out!
And without further ado, onto Rachel’s Back Talk!
From the Back Cover:
Escape is Anna Rone’s only option. Never again will she be trapped in a loveless marriage. A new life in America means safety—and discovering the truth behind her beloved brother’s death. But when she is nearly captured and forced to return to England, her vow to never marry for anything but love is forgotten when she must marry for protection. Perhaps the handsome man she accepts is truly as caring as he seems. If he is not, her future in America is darker than ever before.
Captain Henry Donaldson aided the colonists too many times. And now, the British army intends to make him pay with his life. Without his friends in Sandwich, he would be a dead man. He’s already changed his name, and when the kind, courageous woman he rescued offers to become his bride, he accepts despite the risks. His past taught him that women are not to be trusted and that love can cut deeper than the sword. Only time will reveal if this choice will bring the greatest pain he’s ever known.

I love Amber Perry’s stories! Her attention to historical detail makes the characters and the lives that they live come to life. As I read So Rare A Gift, I felt as though I was swept in the plot of the book and experiencing the danger that Anna, Henry, and their friends were.
Both Anna and Henry do things that benefit themselves. They believe that they need to protect themselves, never imagining that they other may in turn what to offer protection. Anna has never wanted to live under someone she does not love. She finds however, that love is sometimes unexpected and perhaps even unintentional.
I loved how Henry’s character really developed. After meeting him in book 1, I couldn’t wait to learn more about his story. I love his desire to protect Anna, and he unknowingly, is willing to risk everything in order to ensure that she stays safe.
Of course, there were other swoon-worthy moments in the book that made me cry (no spoilers, I promise :)). But I also loved the friendship that continued between Henry, Eliza, Thomas, Kitty, Nathaniel, and then Anna throughout the series. These three couples were willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of friendship. In the midst of danger (aka. The British Soldiers), these friends stayed strong and looked out for each other at every turn in the road.
