“Luther & Katharina” ~ Book Review
Welcome back to Rachel’s Back Talk! I’m so glad you could join me again. Today I am reviewing Jody Hedlund’s newest release, Luther and Katharina.
As is my custom, if I could ask Jody one question about Luther and Katharina it would be — “What made you want to write about the true story of Martin Luther?” And if you want to know why I asked that question, I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out!
And without further ado, onto Rachel’s Back Talk!
From the Back Cover:
In the 16th century, nun Katharina von Bora’s fate fell no further than the Abbey. Until she read the writings of Martin Luther.
His sweeping Catholic church reformation—condemning a cloistered life and promoting the goodness of marriage—awakened her desire for everything she’d been forbidden. Including Martin Luther himself.
Despite the fact that the attraction and tension between them is undeniable, Luther holds fast to his convictions and remains isolated, refusing to risk anyone’s life but his own. And Katharina longs for love, but is strong-willed. She clings proudly to her class distinction, pining for nobility over the heart of a reformer. They couldn’t be more different.
But as the world comes tumbling down around them, and with Luther’s threatened life a constant strain, these unlikely allies forge an unexpected bond of understanding, support and love.
Together, they will alter the religious landscape forever.

Every time I read Jody’s books, I fall in love with them over and over! The character’s struggles and joys are shared with the reader that makes you feel like you are really there. I absolutely loved that Jody wrote a historical fiction from the 16th century that highlighted Martin Luther and his wife Katharina.
Katharina was a wonderful heroine. I admired her courage to go after what she believed in and felt needed to be changed. She also stood up for those she cared about. As with any person, Katharina’s pride often got in her way — but she found that Martin Luther was a nice balance. Sometimes I wanted to just tell them that if they would admit their feelings, things would go a lot easier!!
I never knew how hard it was for the nuns, monks, and those following Martin Luther during the Reformation. I loved how a true historical book could be added with elements of fiction that make it purely enjoyable.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion which I have given.
