“Breaking Free” ~ Book Review

May 17, 2016 by

Welcome back to Rachel’s Back Talk! I’m so glad you could join me again. Today I am reviewing Jennifer Slattery’s book, Breaking Free.

As is my custom, if I could ask Jennifer one question about Breaking Free it would be — “Was it difficult for you not to fix Alice’s life and make her happy again?” And if you want to know why I asked that question, I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out!

And without further ado, onto Rachel’s Back Talk!

From the Back Cover:

Sometimes it takes losing everything to grab hold of what really matters.

Women’s ministry leader and Seattle housewife, Alice Goddard, and her successful graphic-designer husband appear to have it all together. Until their credit and debit cards are denied, launching Alice into an investigation that only leads to the discovery of secrets. Meanwhile, her husband is trapped in a downward spiral of lies, shame, and self-destruction. Can they break free from their deception and turn to the only One who can save them? And will it be in time to save their marriage?

Though it wasn’t historical fiction, I really enjoyed reading Jennifer’s book and getting a taste of her writing style! Alice and Trent’s story was heart-wrenching. Jennifer definitely has a way of pulling the reader right into the story and connecting with the characters.

Alice and Trent hit a rough spot in their marriage — like what is very common in our society today. Alice is afraid of what Trent will do to her and her sons, and I believe Jennifer portrayed Alice’s fear in a very realistic way. Alice wasn’t sure where to go or who to turn to, but it was encouraging to see her friend continually try to get Alice to open up. Beth, Alice’s friend, showed Alice and also the reader, what the meaning of true friendship should look like!

I received this book from New Hope Publishers in exchange for an honest review which I have given.
